WHY
AHI KAA?

"Kia
mura tonu nga Ahi Kaa mo te matemateaone"
Keep the home fires burning so loved ones will always return.
The
proverb above relates to a part of the Maori belief system, that
the Marae and homeland occupants both literally and metaphorically
"keep the home fires burning", securing and keeping safe the place
where people of the iwi (tribe) and hapu (subtribe) come from. Such
a metaphorical proverb is as relevant to each Maori persons relation
to their homelands as much as it is to each New Zealanders relation
to their nation.
AhiKaa.com
will strive to keep the spirit of "returning to the Ahi Kaa"
alive, through innovative and energised writing on identity, culture,
politics, and ecology in Aotearoa New Zealand in the 21st Century.
